An individual's heroism cannot be predicted by his heritage, as is evidenced by the fact that Roland Keefer actually gives up his life working to put out the fire on the Montauk, whereas his brother Tom jumps ship during the fire caused by the kamikaze incident on the Caine. He also foreshadows the future; for example, at one point in the novel the lawyer Barney Greenwald states that Native American tribes are regaining their sovereignty in federal courts. The rules, the lingo, strike me as comical. His opinion, after the captain was found sane by three Navy psychiatrists , is that Maryk was legally unjustified in relieving Queeg. Despite his own disgust with Maryk's and Willie's actions, Greenwald decides to take the case after deducing Keefer's role. At that time, society determined that women should stay at home to raise children into good citizens. As an anonymous reviewer in Time noted, Wouk "spearheads a mutiny against the literary stereotypes of rebel-lion—against three decades of U. He tells the gathering that he feels ashamed of having destroyed Queeg on the stand because Queeg did the necessary duty of guarding America in the peacetime Navy, which people like Keefer saw as beneath them. He manages to get transferred to the USS Oaks. Wouk perceives himself as a realist in the tradition of Cooper, Howells, and Dreiser, and like his predecessors he addresses his fiction to a popular, rather than critical, audience.
Some of my best friends are psychopaths. Many of the incidents and plot details are autobiographical. The novel does not seek only to reflect our reading process back on itself; it also serves as a moral judgment on us.
The Caine Mutiny grew a comparison of beatrice potter books out of Wouks.

Where this book really shines is in probing the effects of extreme conditions on individuals and how they react under those conditions. The novel shows that the process of maturation is long; in fact, by the end of the novel, Willie realizes that his maturation isn't complete. After the executive officer is killed, Rollo takes command of the fire fighting and conning of the ship. Herman Melville wrote a brilliantly and symbolically charged novella in He tells the gathering that he feels ashamed of having destroyed Queeg on the stand because Queeg did the necessary duty of guarding America in the peacetime Navy, which people like Keefer saw as beneath them. Alhough The Caine Mutiny remains his best work by critical consensus, Wouk did not fare any better over time. Given these contemporaries and their rejection of the value system of Wouk's martial characters, it is little wonder that critics dismissed Wouk or that no person of American letters claims to have been influenced by him.
Yet the novel also suggests that maturity is often prompted by traumatic events, for, when asked by May how it is possible that he has changed, Willie points to the kamikaze incident. Even Greenwald's character assassination of Queeg during the court-martial can be viewed as one of the inevitable inequities of war.
Caine, an obsolete warship converted from a World War I -era destroyer. The shared celebration for Maryk's victory and Keefer's literary contract underscore the insistent suggestion that there are two novels for which Keefer must take credit.
